One poem by Sophie Jennis

There was a horse I met, his name was the thought of a tree. I saw him

in the backdrop of darkness in my mind, and on a farm, and in the desert.

My friend gave me a shoe – I took it and threw it from a cliff.

I repeated the words a father told me,

a friend’s father, in their garage. I called the shoe back

to me in my mind and threw it over and over again,

repeating my mantra in the language of snakes.

When I found peace the wind stopped blowing and the dust settled,

in the desert, the horse could breathe, the horse was hot. The horse ran

and was depicted on a blanket hanging somewhere in Arizona.
