Winter Contest Update by Issue 55’s Managing Editor, Nicola Sebastian

Dear fellow readers and writers,

As the leaves are starting to turn, our journal’s pages are filling up with some truly amazing fiction, poetry, translation, and of course art, thanks to our wonderful hardworking editors. Meanwhile, our website has been featuring promising and established writers from all over the world, not just publishing their creative work, but also engaging them critically in exclusive interviews. If you haven’t read our conversation with Beijing-based mythorealist writer, Yan Lianke, you should go do that right now. No, really, we’ll wait right here.

No, really, we’ll wait right here.

The coming of fall also brings with it the opening of our annual Winter Contest! We invite you to submit your very best work, since we have the very best judges—and by that I mean Roxane Gay, Eula Biss, and Mary Ruefle, who we are very honored to have as judges for the fiction, nonfiction, and poetry categories of this year’s contest. We are also excited about working with various organizations such as PEN to solicit submissions from incarcerated writers for the very first time.

The winner of each category (fiction, nonfiction, and poetry) will receive a cash prize of $500 and have their winning work published in the print edition of the journal, which comes out in the spring. The contest opened on October 3rd and will remain open until December 12. For more information on the contest guidelines and how to submit, click here.

We’re certain that a diversity of voices will flourish in print and online for the Columbia Journal this year, and we can’t wait to read your work!

Yours,
Nicola
